Instructions
Pause/Start toggles stop and go for the revolving red bead.
Center - centers the little blue circle.
Drag the Ruler to make measurements.
Amplitude - is controlled by the upper slider or A buttons.
Wavelength - is controlled by the lower slider or λ buttons.
Suggested Learning Activities.
- What happens to the frequency of the blue bead if you increase the wavelength?
- What happens to the frequency of the wave if you decrease the wavelength?
- Does the speed of the wave depend on any of the following?
Amplitude, Wavelength, Frequency (of the oscillating blue bead).
Related Question: Does the speed of sound depend on loudness or pitch?
- Measure different wavelengths by dragging the ruler up to a paused wave.
- Measure a period using a smartphone timer.
Count 10 oscillations, then divide your time in seconds by 10.
- Plot wavelength against period for the 8 wavelength settings (the λ buttons).
- Can you determine the wave speed from the slope of your graph?
- What are the units for your wave speed?
- Can you measure the wave speed (m/s) directly with a timer and the ruler.
